A speaker driver require an amplifier to boost the signal strength to match the wattage output. Choosing the right amplifier will bring out the best performance from your speakers. Let’s see what are the differences between Active and Passive speakers and what are the Pros and Cons.
Passive Speakers
A passive speaker comes with no built in amplifier. It can be identified with no active power input. You will need to connect it to an external amplifier to function.
Pros:
- Customuzable setup
- System can be upgraded
- Easier to place the speakers without power cord limitation
Cons:
- Need some technical knowledge to choose matching amplifier.
- Risk of damage if over powered.
Active Speakers
Active Speakers comes with built in amplifier. It can directly powered up and function. Most of active speakers system comes with one active and one passive speaker for the other channel.
Pros:
- Plug and Play
- Easy to setup
- Driver and amplifier are designed to work synergistically
Cons:
- Less upgrade option
Conclusion
Depending on how what your needs, passive speaker and active speakers has their own pro and cons respectively. As long as it suits your need, both are good speakers.
